Farmers Market Urban Garden

Minneapolis, Minnesota

An asphalt parking lot used for vehicle storage was transformed into an urban oasis and outdoor retail area.

The Urban Garden:

  • reduces the heat island effect of the site
  • adds additional plant material
  • reduces storm water runoff
  • and creates a small oasis for visitors of the farmers market to get away from the hustle and bustle of the vending stalls to a cool, quiet landscaped area

In the design, Kaas Wilson was joined by Tom Cesare P.E. of BKBM Engineers who designed the storm water runoff and Bryan Carlson ASLA who designed the planting materials. The City of Minneapolis engineering department awarded the final design a storm water credit, which reduces the storm water tax by 50%.
